Senior Spotlight: A- Who are you?

“ ‘Who are you?’ said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, ‘I-I hardly know, sir, just at present— at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.’ ”

Many of us can relate to this comment from Alice at some point in our lives, especially senior year. Seniors often find themselves asked:

“Where will you apply?

“Are you going to college?”

“Where are you going to college?”

“Did you get any scholarships?”

“Are you living on campus?”

“What is your intended major?”

How many seniors are asked:

“What bring you joy?”

“Are you hoping to travel for work or pleasure?”

“Do you want to have pets as an adult?”

“What do you look forward to the most after graduation?”

The intention behind these questions at its very core comes down to “Who are you?” Our middle-aged attempts to connect in a matter of minutes and offer any relevant wisdom we may have to ease your journey, well intentioned of course. Those question though become more complicated when YOU yourself may not know the answers. Maybe you think you do know the answers… let’s work together and find out!

Maybe you are the student with the next ten years PERFECTLY planned or maybe you are the student asking yourself “HOW ARE WE SENIORS ALREADY?!”

Regardless where you are on that spectrum of “senior sink-in,” there are some questions we recommend you ask yourself:

  1. Does the idea of my current path spark excitement or stress (dread?) more strongly?

  2. Do I want my hobby to be my career, or my career to support my hobby?

  3. Do I want to live in a metropolitan city, suburb, or a rural area?

  4. Will my current path support the lifestyle I imagine?

  5. Do I have financial support from family or dependent on other funding sources?

  6. Do I like hands on/experiential learning or a traditional classroom?

  7. Do you have an activity you enjoy that never feels like a chore?

  8. Keeping in mind there is truth in the saying, “Money can’t buy happiness,” what about you’re chosen career path will make you happy?

  9. Have any third parties influenced your current path?

  10. Have you considered multiple paths to your career?
